Lawmakers Take Down Lobbyists for Fourth Straight Congressional Hockey Challenge Win

Rep. Tom Emmer, PWHPA’s Baylee Wellhausen help lift Lawmakers to 4-2 victory in 12th annual charity game

Arlington, VA – After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the 2022 Congressional Hockey Challenge, the annual charity hockey game between lawmakers, administration officials, and staff versus lobbyists, returned to MedStar Capital Iceplex for an instant classic between the Lawmaker and Lobbyist teams.

After entering the third period tied two apiece, two late strikes from the Lawmakers squad sealed a 4-2 victory, marking the fourth straight win over the Lobbyist team.

“Tonight’s game was truly a battle from start to finish,” said Tim Regan, co-founder and captain of the Lawmakers team. “To come out here after two years, shake off the rust, and play a competitive game for causes that advance the game of hockey is an absolute honor. Another year of bragging rights is always fun, too.”

Representative Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), the lone member of Congress to play in this year’s game, shored up the Lawmakers defense, serving as a steady presence on the blue line. And for the first time, the game featured two players from the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA), with Baylee Wellhausen joining the Lawmakers, and Sophia Shaver representing the Lobbyist squad.

“I can’t begin to express how fun it was to play in the Congressional Hockey Challenge this year,” said the PWHPA’s Wellhausen. “Hockey is for everyone, and charity games like this are helping to make that happen. I hope by stepping on the ice, we’re able to inspire the next generation of players to lace up their skates.”

Since 2009, the game has raised over $1.2 million for charities including the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club, USA Hockey Warriors Ice Hockey Program, Capital Warriors Beltway Hockey Program, and the Tampa Warriors Hockey Heals event. And new for 2022, the game now supports the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association to support the growth of women’s and girl’s hockey in America.
